Fact Or Fiction - Which is Which in These Situations?

I have listed here a couple of situations where identity theft crimes can be committed. We will then try to see if these situations are mere fictions or can they actually take place?

Scenario number 1: To impress your date, you dine in one of the most expensive restaurants in town. You had a nice night and you even had the quartet play you a song as you dine. When the check arrives, you give him your credit card to pay for your bill. The waiter then proceeds to swipe your credit card in a pager-like device that is attached to his belt before he actually swiped your card on the restaurant's terminal to charge your dinner. Two weeks later, the waiter sells the pager for a good five hundred dollars since he has 50 credit card information stored on that pager. Is this a fact or is this fiction?

Fact. This is something that can always happen when you let your credit card out of your sight. While it is not advisable to bring huge amounts of cash, you always have to be vigilant on who handles your credit card and how it is managed. You have to be very careful with who you hand it to and what they do with it. There are a lot of credit card scanners that are available for purchase and your waiter might be using theirs.

Scenario number 2: You always bring your social security card in your wallet because you believe that you have to be prepared always. One day, your wallet gets stolen and the person who stole it sold your social security information to an illegal alien to gain legal employment in the United States. Is this a fact or is this fiction?

Fact. Illegal immigrants always face the consequence of entering the country illegally by not being able to get legal jobs because of they don't have the required documents to apply for a new social security number. What happens then is either they are forced to take on odd jobs that pay very low, or steal another person's social security number to obtain employment.

Scenario number 3: You are studying in a university and one day, while you are in the library, your laptop got stolen. The student who stole your laptop used "special programs" that accessed all your deleted files including all the sites that you've visited and the information that you keyed in like your credit card number. He then proceeded to purchasing merchandise online using your credit card information and run up your credit. Is this a fact or is this fiction?

Fact. Identity thieves have now taken a new face-that of the computer hackers. These people have very sophisticated programs that allow them to access even the hard deleted files in your hard drives including the many cookies and temp files that are stored in your computer.

Wherever you go, you are always in danger of having your identity stolen so you have to be more than just careful. You have to be vigilant.
